What the word actually means, which plants get the label, and how solid the evidence really is
"Adaptogen" gets used loosely enough that it's worth pinning down. The term was coined in the Soviet Union in 1947 and has a specific — if contested — definition. A plant is generally proposed as an adaptogen when it meets three criteria:
- It's non-toxic at normal doses.
- It's associated with helping the body cope with a broad range of stressors rather than one specific one.
- It's associated with returning the body toward balance (homeostasis) rather than pushing it in one direction.
That third point is where the popular version overreaches. You'll often read that an adaptogen "knows" whether to raise or lower your cortisol. That's a tidy story, not an established mechanism — the underlying research is largely preclinical, the human trials are small and short, and "adaptogen" remains a research category rather than a regulatory or clinical one.
Read what follows as a description of five interesting plants and how they're traditionally used, with an honest note on how much is actually known about each. Everyday stress is a normal part of life; persistent stress, anxiety or burnout is something to raise with a doctor, and no plant on this list is a substitute for that conversation.
Ashwagandha
Withania somnifera, sometimes called Indian ginseng, is a shrub whose root has been used in Ayurvedic practice for centuries. Its characteristic compounds are the withanolides.
It's the best-studied plant here. Several small randomised trials have reported reductions in self-reported stress scores and in measured cortisol, and it's the adaptogen most likely to come up in a serious research discussion. The caveats are the usual ones: small samples, short durations, and considerable variation between preparations.
Taste and use: bitter and distinctly earthy, traditionally taken as a root powder in warm milk with honey, and usually in the evening.
Moringa
Moringa oleifera, the miracle tree, is often grouped with the adaptogens — though it sits more comfortably in the "nutrient-dense whole food" category, which is a stronger claim anyway. The dried leaf is a source of vitamins A, C and E and several B vitamins, along with calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium, and it contains all nine essential amino acids, which is uncommon in a leafy green.
The research on moringa and stress is early and largely preclinical — a 2014 study frequently cited on this topic was conducted in mice, which is a reason to keep researching rather than a finding you can apply to yourself.

Holy basil (tulsi)
Ocimum tenuiflorum is one of the most revered plants in Ayurvedic tradition, grown in courtyards across India and used both ritually and medicinally. It's aromatic, clove-like and slightly peppery — quite different from the sweet basil in pesto.
It's been studied for a range of purposes and reviewed in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, though as with the rest of this list the human evidence is limited. Comparisons you may see drawn between tulsi and prescription medication are not supported by the quality of research available, and we won't make them.
Use: most commonly as a tea, brewed from the fresh or dried leaf.
Siberian ginseng (eleuthero)
Eleutherococcus senticosus isn't a true ginseng at all — a common source of confusion, since it shares neither genus nor active compounds with Panax ginseng. Its characteristic compounds are the eleutherosides.
It has a long history of use in Russian and Chinese traditional medicine and was one of the plants the original adaptogen research was built on. Modern reviews describe interest in its relationship to the stress response, with the same caveat about study quality.
Note: eleuthero is one of the more likely herbs on this list to interact with medication, particularly anticoagulants and blood-pressure drugs. Worth a specific conversation with a pharmacist.
Rhodiola rosea
Rhodiola rosea — golden root or arctic root — is an alpine plant that grows in cold, high places across the Arctic and the mountains of Europe and Asia. Its root is the part used, and its characteristic compounds are rosavin and salidroside.
It's the plant most associated with fatigue and burnout in the research literature. One open-label study followed 118 people experiencing burnout who took 400 mg daily for twelve weeks and reported improvements on several self-reported measures. That's an encouraging signal, but an open-label trial with no control group is a weak form of evidence — worth noting honestly rather than quoting as a result.
What actually helps with stress
The interventions with the strongest evidence behind them are the least commercial ones: sleep, regular movement, daylight, time with other people, and — where it's warranted — professional support. Herbs sit alongside those, and the ritual of making a cup of something warm and stepping away from a screen may well be doing more than the ingredients.
