"Superfood" is a marketing word, not a scientific one. No regulator defines it and no nutrient threshold earns it. So when moringa gets called one, the fair question is: what is actually in the leaf, and what does the evidence genuinely support? This is our attempt at an honest answer.
What Moringa Is
Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree native to the foothills of the Himalayas and now cultivated across South Asia, Africa and Central America. It is sometimes called the drumstick tree, after its long seed pods, and sometimes the horseradish tree, after the peppery flavor of its root. In the places it grows, the leaves have been eaten as a vegetable for centuries — cooked into stews and dals, not stirred into smoothies. That culinary history is worth holding onto, because it frames moringa correctly: it is a nutrient-dense leafy green, and it behaves like one.
The Nutritional Riches of Moringa
Dried moringa leaf concentrates what the fresh leaf contains. Representative values per 100 g of leaf powder:
- Complete plant protein — around 27 g. This is the genuinely unusual part. Moringa leaf contains all nine essential amino acids, which very few leafy greens do.
- Calcium — around 2,000 mg. Among the highest of any edible leaf.
- Iron — around 28 mg, in the non-heme form found in all plant foods.
- Potassium — around 1,300 mg, plus magnesium and phosphorus.
- Beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, along with vitamin E and several B vitamins.
- Polyphenols including quercetin, chlorogenic acid and kaempferol, plus glucosinolates that break down into isothiocyanates — the compounds behind the leaf's faint peppery finish.
Two honest caveats. First, published analyses vary a lot: growing region, leaf maturity, drying temperature and storage all move these numbers, sometimes by a factor of two. Second, vitamin C does not survive drying well. Fresh moringa leaves are often cited around 200 mg per 100 g; dried powder typically retains a fraction of that. Anyone quoting fresh-leaf vitamin C figures on a bag of powder is quoting the wrong number.
What the Research Supports — and What It Doesn't
Moringa is genuinely well studied for a plant of its kind, but most of that literature is laboratory or animal work. Human trials exist, and they are mostly small. What can be said fairly:
- Nutrient contribution is not in dispute. The leaf's mineral and protein content is measurable and reproducible; this is food-composition science, not health claims.
- Antioxidant activity in vitro is well documented. Moringa's polyphenols demonstrably neutralize free radicals in laboratory assays. What that translates to in a person eating a teaspoon a day is a separate and much less settled question.
- Isothiocyanates are present, and they are an active research subject. These are the compounds the leaf releases when its glucosinolates break down, and they have been studied for effects on inflammatory signalling pathways -- almost entirely in cell and animal models, which is a long way from a conclusion about a person drinking tea.
- Nutrients relevant to normal immune function are present. Vitamin A precursors, vitamin E and zinc all have established roles in the normal functioning of the immune system, which is a statement about nutrition in general, not about what any tea will do for you.
- Iron and B vitamins support normal energy metabolism. Again, this is basic biochemistry — these nutrients are cofactors in how the body releases energy from food — and it is not a promise that a cup of tea will make you feel different.
What we won't tell you is that moringa is a remedy for any medical condition. It isn't, and neither is any other food.
How to Actually Use It
- Keep it off the heat. Moringa's more delicate compounds, vitamin C included, degrade with prolonged high heat. Stir powder into soups and curries after they come off the burner, or into cold liquids.
- Start small. One teaspoon is a normal serving. The flavor is green and slightly peppery; too much at once and it dominates whatever you put it in.
- Pair it with acid. Lemon, lime or tomato alongside moringa helps your body take up the plant iron in the leaf — a well-established nutritional interaction.
- Or just drink it. Brewed leaf is the lowest-effort route and the one with no flavor engineering required.

Where Ours Comes From

Leaves are harvested by hand, shade- and low-temperature dried to protect color and nutrients, and milled on site. That vertical control is the reason we can say anything specific about drying temperature at all — most brands buying bulk powder genuinely cannot.
The Bottom Line
Moringa earns its reputation as one of the more nutrient-dense edible leaves on the planet. It does not earn the claims stacked on top of it by the wider supplement industry. Treat it as an exceptionally good green — one that happens to keep in a jar for a year and disperses into anything — and it will do a genuinely useful job in a varied diet.
