Inflammation is one of the most-discussed and least-understood words in nutrition. Here is what it actually is, what the research on moringa does and does not show, and how to read a study before you change your diet because of one.
What inflammation actually is
Inflammation is not a malfunction. It is a core part of your body's defence mechanism — the process that brings immune cells and fluid to an injury or infection so that repair can begin. Without it, a cut would not close and an infection would not clear.
The problem is not inflammation itself but inflammation that persists once its job is done, or that starts without an obvious trigger. According to published research, persistent low-grade inflammation is associated with a wide range of chronic conditions, including metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. People living with these conditions often show higher levels of inflammatory markers.
Note the word associated. Association is not causation, and the direction of the arrow is genuinely unsettled in much of this literature — inflammation may be a driver, a consequence, or both.
Acute and chronic: two different things
Inflammation is usually sorted into two categories, and conflating them is the source of a great deal of confusion:
- Acute inflammation — short-lived, usually resolving within two weeks. This is the visible, useful kind: a swollen ankle, a sore throat. Your body typically recovers completely.
- Chronic inflammation — persisting beyond about six weeks, sometimes long after the original infection or injury has resolved. It has been linked to autoimmune conditions and to prolonged stress.
Almost all of the popular writing about "reducing inflammation" is aimed at the second kind. Almost all of the everyday experience people have of inflammation is the first kind. They do not respond to the same things.
Common signs
The classical signs of acute inflammation are heat, pain, redness, swelling and loss of function at the affected site.
Chronic inflammation is harder to see and its reported signs are non-specific — body aches, persistent fatigue, disrupted sleep, low mood, digestive discomfort. Because those signs overlap with dozens of unrelated causes, they are not something to pin on inflammation by yourself, from a blog post. If they persist, that is a conversation for a doctor, who can order the blood markers that actually measure it.
What the research on moringa shows — and what it doesn't
Moringa leaf contains several compounds that have drawn research interest in this area. The most-studied are its isothiocyanates, sulphur-containing compounds also found in broccoli and mustard greens, which is where much of the laboratory work has focused. The leaf also carries quercetin, chlorogenic acid, beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E — an antioxidant profile of 47 compounds in total.
A 2020 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology surveyed the published work on moringa and immune-related processes, including its observed effects on pro-inflammatory signalling and on the regulation of immune cells. A 2014 study examined related mechanisms.
Here is the part that usually gets left out. The great majority of this work is in vitro — cells in a dish — or in animal models, typically at concentrations far above what anyone consumes as food. Human clinical trials on moringa and inflammatory markers are few, small and short. That does not make the research uninteresting; it makes it early. Moringa may support the body's normal inflammatory response. It is a food, not a remedy, and the evidence does not support describing it as one.
How to read a moringa study, briefly: check whether it was done in people or in a dish; check the dose against a realistic serving (moringa powder is served at two teaspoons, or 4g); check whether the outcome measured was a biological marker or how someone actually felt. Most of the strongest-sounding claims about moringa online fail at least two of those three checks.
What a diet that supports a normal inflammatory response looks like
Harvard Health and most dietary guidance converge on a fairly boring picture, and its boringness is a point in its favour — this is a pattern with far more evidence behind it than any single ingredient:
- Plenty of vegetables and fruit, across a range of colours
- Whole grains rather than refined ones
- Oily fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds as the main fat sources
- Less ultra-processed food, less added sugar, moderate alcohol
- Regular movement, adequate sleep, managed stress — all three influence inflammatory markers independently of diet
Moringa fits inside that pattern as one nutrient-dense green among several. It is not a substitute for the pattern, and no serious reading of the evidence would suggest otherwise.
How to actually use moringa
Moringa is easy to keep in a diet because it does not demand anything. The dried leaf is mild and vegetal — closer to matcha than to spinach, without the bitterness — and it works hot or cold.
- As tea. One bag, water just off the boil, three to five minutes. It brews clear golden-green with a soft, slightly sweet finish. The plain leaf is naturally caffeine-free, so it works in the evening. Our herbal range runs to twenty flavours if the plain leaf is too austere for you.
- In smoothies. A teaspoon of moringa powder disappears into almost any blend. Banana and cinnamon soften the green note particularly well.
- In cooking. Stir it into soups, dals or pesto off the heat — prolonged boiling dulls both the colour and the heat-sensitive nutrients.
