What adaptogens are, what the sleep research does and doesn't show, and where a warm caffeine-free cup fits into an evening.
"Adaptogen" is one of those words that arrived in wellness marketing fully formed, with very little explanation attached. It's worth unpacking, because the underlying idea is more interesting — and more modest — than the label usually suggests.
What an Adaptogen Actually Is
An adaptogen is a plant, not a pharmaceutical. The term comes from Soviet pharmacology in the 1940s, when researcher Nikolai Lazarev used it to describe substances that appeared to help an organism cope with non-specific stress. The working definition that emerged has three parts: the plant should be non-toxic at normal doses, should help the body resist a range of stressors rather than one specific one, and should have a normalising effect — nudging systems toward baseline rather than pushing them in a single direction.
That last part is what makes adaptogens sound implausible to a lot of people, and it's fair to be skeptical. "Normalising" is a hard thing to demonstrate in a clinical trial, and much of the adaptogen literature is small, short, and uses concentrated extracts rather than food-level amounts. It's a real field of study with real published work; it is not settled science.
Why Sleep Comes Up in This Conversation
The link most often drawn is through cortisol. Cortisol follows a daily rhythm: it peaks shortly after waking, declines across the day, and reaches its low point in the evening as the body prepares for sleep. That curve is one of the signals that keeps your circadian rhythm anchored.
Chronic stress, irregular schedules, late-evening light and inconsistent bedtimes can all flatten or shift that curve. The hypothesis behind adaptogens and sleep is that if a plant compound supports a more typical stress response, the downstream rhythm may settle too. It's a plausible mechanism and an actively researched one. It has not been established as a reliable effect in healthy adults, and no plant is a substitute for medical care if you have a sleep disorder.
Three Plants People Reach For
Ashwagandha
Withania somnifera, sometimes called Indian ginseng, is the most-studied adaptogen in the sleep context — the species name somnifera literally means "sleep-inducing," which tells you how long it's had this reputation. A 2019 randomised trial published in Cureus reported that participants taking a standardised ashwagandha root extract showed reduced sleep-onset latency (the time taken to fall asleep) and improved subjective sleep quality compared with placebo. It was a small study over a ten-week period, and the results warrant follow-up rather than firm conclusions. Ashwagandha is not recommended during pregnancy and can interact with thyroid and sedative medications — check with your doctor first.
Holy basil (tulsi)
Ocimum tenuiflorum has been used across South Asia for centuries and appears in Ayurvedic practice as a plant associated with calm. Reviews in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine have surveyed the research on its constituents, including eugenol and ursolic acid. Most of it is preclinical. Tulsi brews into a pleasant, clove-like, faintly peppery infusion, which is a decent reason to drink it regardless of what the trials eventually show.
Moringa
Moringa oleifera is classified as an adaptogen in some of the literature, and separately it's one of the more nutrient-dense leaves you can drink. Per 100 g of dried leaf, ours carries 27 g protein, 2,000 mg calcium, 28 mg iron, 18,900 IU vitamin A and 220 mg vitamin C, along with all nine essential amino acids, dietary fibre, and antioxidants including quercetin and chlorogenic acid.
For an evening cup, the most relevant fact about moringa isn't an adaptogen claim at all — it's that the leaf contains no caffeine. That's a straightforward, verifiable property, and it's the one that actually matters at 9 p.m. (Two exceptions in our range: Green Tea is under 1 mg, Earl Grey is 5–10 mg. Everything else is caffeine-free.)
The Boring Advice That Works Better
It would be dishonest to write about sleep and only discuss plants. The interventions with the strongest evidence behind them are unglamorous and free:
- A consistent wake time, seven days a week. This anchors the circadian rhythm more effectively than a consistent bedtime does.
- Caffeine curfew. Caffeine's half-life is around five hours, so half of a 4 p.m. coffee is still circulating at 9 p.m. Stopping by early afternoon is one of the highest-return changes most people can make.
- Light exposure early, darkness late. Morning daylight is a strong circadian signal; bright evening screens work against it.
- A cool, dark room. Core body temperature has to drop for sleep onset; a warm bedroom fights that.
- A wind-down that isn't a screen. Twenty to thirty minutes of something low-stimulation — reading, stretching, making a cup of tea.
That last one is where a caffeine-free cup genuinely earns its place. Not as a sedative, but as a cue: a repeatable, five-minute signal that the day is closing. Rituals work partly because they're rituals.
