“Superfood” is a marketing word, not a scientific one. But if you are going to use it, it should mean something specific — and by any consistent definition, moringa qualifies more comfortably than the green that made the term famous.
You know the magazine rack at the supermarket checkout. Every few months a new leaf, berry or seed is on the cover, and the article inside never quite explains what makes it different from the one before. Kale had a decade of that treatment. It was on everything, and almost nobody who wrote about it said what it was actually being compared against.
So let us fix the definition first, then apply it honestly to two plants.
What should “superfood” actually mean?
There is no regulatory definition — the EU has restricted the word on packaging for precisely that reason. But a useful working definition would be a food that is simultaneously:
- Exceptionally nutrient-dense per gram, not merely “healthy”
- A meaningful source of protein, including a full amino acid profile
- Rich in antioxidant plant compounds
- A source of fibre and micronutrients rather than a single isolated headline nutrient
- Realistic to eat regularly — cheap enough, available enough, storable enough
- Sustainable to grow, ideally somewhere that other crops struggle
That last pair matters more than the marketing usually admits. A nutrient-dense plant that needs irrigation, refrigeration and air freight is not much use to most of the world.
Kale: a genuinely good vegetable, oversold
Kale deserves better than the backlash it got. It is a nutritional workhorse: low in calories, high in vitamins K, A and C, full of antioxidants, and cheap. Nothing below is an argument against eating it.
The trouble was only ever the ranking. When researchers at William Paterson University scored 47 fruits and vegetables on the density of 17 key nutrients, kale placed fifteenth — behind watercress, chard, beet greens, spinach, chicory and, yes, romaine lettuce. It is an excellent green. It is not, and never was, in a category of its own.
Per 100 g, kale offers roughly 4.3 g of protein and 150 mg of calcium. Hold those two numbers.
Moringa: the case, with the numbers
Moringa oleifera is native to the Indian subcontinent and now grown across the tropics. It is a tree rather than a vegetable patch plant, it survives drought and poor soil, it can be harvested within its first year, and nearly every part of it is usable — which is why it is called the “tree of life” in some of the places it grows and the “miracle tree” in others.
The leaf is what we work with. Per 100 g of dried leaf:
- Protein: about 27 g — against kale’s 4.3 g, with all nine essential amino acids present
- Calcium: about 2,000 mg — against kale’s 150 mg
- Iron: about 28 mg
- Vitamin C: about 220 mg
- Vitamin A: about 18,900 IU
- 92 nutrients and 47 antioxidant compounds in total, including quercetin, chlorogenic acid, lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene
One honest caveat on those figures, because it is the caveat every superfood article skips: this is dried leaf compared to dried leaf, or dried leaf compared to fresh vegetables. Drying removes water and concentrates everything left behind. A realistic serving of moringa powder is 2 teaspoons (4 g), not 100 g. The comparison is genuine and it is the standard way these plants are compared — but read it as “gram for gram,” not “a spoonful replaces a salad.”
What survives that caveat is still substantial: moringa gives you far more nutrition per gram of dry weight than the greens it is usually measured against, in a form that keeps in a cupboard for a year.
What it tastes like
Rarely discussed, and the thing that decides whether you keep eating it. Moringa tastes like a green vegetable — closest to fresh spinach or young peas, with a faint peppery finish and none of kale's sulphurous bitterness. It behaves like a savoury ingredient: it disappears into soups, dressings and pesto, sits well against cocoa, and is best cut with fruit acidity in a smoothie.
Brewed as tea, it is much gentler still — lightly earthy, faintly sweet, with no tannic grip, because it is a leaf infusion rather than a true tea. And it is naturally caffeine-free, so the time of day is entirely up to you.
Where ours comes from
We buy single-origin leaf directly from farms in Sri Lanka’s rainforest region, under a bought-leaf model that returns up to 70% of the purchase value to the growers. The leaf is hand-picked and solar-dried rather than industrially heat-processed, which is what keeps the colour deep green and the flavour sweet. Every batch is third-party lab tested, and the range is USDA and EU certified organic.
That is the part of the story a nutrient table cannot show you, and it is the reason two moringa powders at the same price can taste completely different.
The bottom line
Eat the kale. Eat the spinach, the chard and the watercress too. But if “superfood” is going to mean anything at all — density, completeness, storability, sustainability — moringa fits the definition better than the plant that made the word famous, and it does it in forms that are easy to keep up: twenty flavours of caffeine-free herbal tea, pure leaf powder for cooking and blending, and a caffeinated Energy line if you want the morning cup to do more.
Find the flavour that suits you and start there. Consistency beats intensity every time.
