October is when the produce aisle fills up with antioxidant claims, so it seems a fair moment to look at what the word actually means — and at which compounds are genuinely present in moringa leaf, as opposed to which ones get claimed for it.
First, What an Antioxidant Actually Is
Normal metabolism produces reactive oxygen species — unstable molecules, often called free radicals, that will pull an electron from whatever is nearby, including cell membranes and DNA. An antioxidant is simply a molecule that donates an electron to a free radical without becoming destructively reactive itself, breaking the chain.
Two things follow from that definition and are usually left out of the marketing. First, your body makes its own antioxidant enzymes — superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase — and these do the bulk of the work; dietary antioxidants are a supporting cast. Second, some oxidative signalling is useful, which is why "more antioxidants" is not automatically better, and why high-dose antioxidant supplement trials have often disappointed while diets rich in whole plant foods keep looking good.
The Compounds in Moringa Leaf
- Quercetin. A flavonol found in onions, apples and capers as well as moringa. It is among the most studied plant polyphenols, with documented antioxidant activity in laboratory work, and its role in inflammatory signalling has drawn early-stage research interest. Its bioavailability in humans is modest and varies considerably between people.
- Chlorogenic acid. The same polyphenol that makes coffee a major dietary source of antioxidants for most Western adults. It has been studied for its effects on how the body handles glucose after a meal, though human findings remain preliminary and the doses used in trials are typically well above what a serving of tea provides.
- Beta-carotene. A carotenoid pigment the body converts into vitamin A as needed, and one of the reasons moringa leaf is such a deep green. Vitamin A has established roles in normal vision, skin, and the normal functioning of the immune system.
- Kaempferol and other flavonols, plus glucosinolates that break down into isothiocyanates — the compounds responsible for the faint peppery edge in moringa's flavor and a significant part of the research interest in the plant.
- Vitamins C and E, which act as antioxidants directly. Note that vitamin C is heat- and oxygen-sensitive: fresh moringa leaves are high in it, dried leaf powder much less so.
Why We Don't Quote an ORAC Score
You will still see moringa advertised with an ORAC number — Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It is worth knowing that the USDA withdrew its own ORAC database in 2012, on the grounds that the values had been widely misused and that a test-tube measurement of radical-scavenging capacity tells you very little about what happens in a human body after digestion and absorption. Any brand still leading with an ORAC score is quoting a metric its own source retired more than a decade ago. We'd rather tell you which compounds are in the leaf.
What the Evidence Supports
- Measurable antioxidant activity in vitro is well established. Moringa extracts reliably scavenge free radicals in laboratory assays. This is a real finding about the plant's chemistry.
- Cellular and animal studies have examined moringa's polyphenols in the context of oxidative stress, inflammatory signalling and skin health. These are early-stage results and should be read as such.
- Nutrient content supports normal function. Beta-carotene, vitamin E and the minerals in moringa leaf have established roles in normal physiology — skin, vision, immune function — which is a statement about nutrition generally, not a claim about what a cup of tea will do.
- Human clinical evidence is limited. Trials exist, most are small, and none of them make moringa a remedy for any medical condition.
Getting the Most From It
- Store it away from light and heat. Polyphenols and carotenoids degrade with both. A sealed opaque container in a cupboard, not a clear jar on a sunny counter.
- Add powder off the heat. Stir it into soups, sauces and porridge after they leave the burner.
- Eat it with a little fat. Beta-carotene is fat-soluble and absorbed better alongside oil, nuts, yogurt or avocado — which is a good argument for the moringa-in-a-salad-dressing approach.
- Don't chase a single food. The consistent finding across nutrition research is that variety of plant foods, not concentration of any one, is what tracks with good outcomes.

How Ours Is Grown
Miracle Tree grows its own moringa on certified organic farms rather than buying leaf on the open market, and dries it at low temperature in the shade. That matters more for antioxidants than for almost any other nutrient: high-temperature drying is fast and cheap, and it is also what degrades the polyphenols and carotenoids you are buying the leaf for in the first place.
