What the nutrient data actually shows — and what it doesn't.
Moringa has spent the last decade moving from specialist health-food shelves into mainstream cupboards, and the claims have inflated roughly in step. This piece does the opposite: it sticks to what's measurable in the leaf, names the nutrients doing the work, and is explicit about where the evidence is still early.
First, What Moringa Is
Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing tree native to the foothills of the Indian subcontinent. Its leaves have been a staple vegetable across South Asia and the tropics for centuries, and it appears in Ayurvedic texts under the name Shigru. The Roman and Greek worlds knew the tree too, mostly for its seed oil.

What's Measurably in the Leaf
Per 100 g of dried leaf, our published composition figures are:
- Protein — 27 g, including all nine essential amino acids, which makes moringa a complete plant protein. That is genuinely uncommon for a leafy green.
- Calcium — 2,000 mg
- Iron — 28 mg
- Vitamin A — 18,900 IU (largely as beta-carotene)
- Vitamin C — 220 mg
Alongside those: vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B7, D, E and K; potassium and magnesium; dietary fibre; and phytonutrients including alpha- and beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, chlorophyll, quercetin and chlorogenic acid. The brand's published count is 92 nutrients and 47 antioxidants in the leaf.
The serving-size caveat, stated plainly. Those figures are per 100 g of dried leaf. A real serving of powder is 2 teaspoons (4 g), which supplies about 10% DV iron, 10% DV calcium and 6% DV of vitamins A, C and B1 — meaningful, and not a multivitamin. Any article quoting the 100 g numbers as though they were a serving is misleading you.
Five Nutrient-Backed Reasons People Drink It
1. Vitamin E and antioxidant content, for skin
Moringa leaf contains vitamin E and a range of polyphenols. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps offset oxidative stress — the everyday cellular wear caused in part by UV exposure and pollution — and the body uses vitamin C in the normal formation of collagen, a structural protein in skin. This is nutrition supporting normal skin structure and function. It is not a treatment for a skin condition, and no food reverses ageing.
2. A complete plant protein and all nine essential amino acids
Amino acids are the building blocks the body uses to construct and repair tissue, enzymes and hormones. Nine of them are "essential" — the body can't synthesise them and has to get them from food. Most single plant foods are short on at least one. Moringa leaf carries all nine, which is why it's used as a protein-supporting food in the regions where it grows. 3. Plant-source iron and B vitamins
Iron is central to haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in the blood, and B vitamins are cofactors in normal energy metabolism — which is to say, in how the body converts food into usable fuel. Moringa's 28 mg per 100 g is a substantial figure for a plant. One practical note: this is non-heme iron, which the body absorbs more efficiently in the presence of vitamin C. Moringa happens to carry both, and pairing it with citrus or berries helps further.
4. Calcium, magnesium and vitamin K
At 2,000 mg per 100 g of dried leaf, calcium is moringa's single most striking mineral figure — roughly four times that of milk, gram for gram of dried leaf against fresh. The leaf also supplies magnesium and vitamin K. All three are nutrients the body uses in normal bone maintenance.
5. Fibre, chlorophyll and isothiocyanates
Moringa is high in dietary fibre, which supports digestive comfort and regularity as part of a varied diet. The leaf also contains chlorophyll and a family of naturally occurring sulphur compounds called isothiocyanates — the same class of compound found in broccoli and mustard greens, and the subject of most of the current laboratory research into moringa. That research is early-stage and does not establish moringa as a therapy for any condition.
Where the Evidence Actually Stands
Two things are true at once, and most moringa content only tells you one of them.
The nutrient composition is well-documented and not seriously disputed: it has been measured repeatedly in peer-reviewed food-science literature, and it is why moringa has been used as a food-security crop by international agencies for decades.
The clinical picture is much thinner. Most published work on moringa's physiological effects is laboratory or animal research, or small human trials, often using concentrated extracts rather than whole dried leaf at dietary amounts. It is promising and it is preliminary, and it does not establish moringa as a therapy for, or a preventive measure against, any condition. We'd rather tell you that than not.
